11/02/14: Dia de los Muertos at Julia Burgos Art Center

On 11/01 I had the chance to meet Gibran Raya, during Cetiliztli Nauhcampa Quetzalcoatl in Ixachitlan's dance procession at Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead in Smithsonian's Nation Museum of the American Indian. From there, I was in invited to Sunday's Dia de los Muertos at Julia Burgos Art Center (1680 Lexington Ave NY NY 10029) from 1-10pm.
There were workshops, panel discussions (on immigration, and it's effects on cultural customs), music and dance (prayer and ceremonial as well), open mic (also a report on a demonstration that took place at Union Square that day).
The event was also a fundraiser for the families of the 43 students from Ayotzinapa school in Iguala, Mexico have been missing for over a month now after a violent encounter with the police.

11/02/14: American Indian Community House's Cheer Section at NYC Marathon

At Sunday's marathon, American Indian Community House, along with the Silver Cloud Singers, had a cheer section at the corner of Manhattan Ave & Greenpoint Ave. Cheering on Team One Spirit (Lakota/ Pine Ridge Reservation), and all of the marathon runners. Team One Spirit runs to raise funds to build youth centers and inspire native youth. They might have the chance next year to run a marathon in Germany. (Here are a few photos of Team One Spirit, also known as The Lakota 5, passing by the cheer section. Along with photos of the Silver Cloud Singers, as they drum, and members also handing out water to the marathon runners as they pass by. Also a clip of the Silver Cloud Singers, and the roaring cheers as the runners run by.
